Iron Filters for Well Water on a Budget: Affordable Options That Work – Your Comprehensive Guide pen_spark

Yes, you can find effective and affordable iron filters for your well water. Millions of homeowners across the United States rely on well water for their daily needs. While well water is often a source of pride and self-sufficiency, it can also present challenges, particularly when it comes to excess iron. Rusty stains on fixtures, a metallic taste in your water, and even potential health concerns are just a few of the issues iron can cause. However, don't despair – there are plenty of budget-friendly solutions available to tackle this problem.

This comprehensive guide will walk you through everything you need to know about iron filters, from understanding why iron in your well water is a problem to choosing the right filter for your needs and budget.

Why is Iron in Well Water a Problem?

While iron is a naturally occurring element and essential for our health in small amounts, excessive levels in well water can lead to a variety of problems:

  • Health Concerns: The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets a secondary standard of 0.3 milligrams per liter (mg/L) for iron in drinking water. While exceeding this limit doesn't necessarily pose an immediate health risk, long-term consumption of high levels of iron can lead to issues like hemochromatosis, a condition where the body stores too much iron. It's particularly important for infants, young children, and pregnant women to avoid excessive iron intake.

  • Aesthetic Issues: Iron is the culprit behind those unsightly reddish-brown stains that plague sinks, toilets, bathtubs, and laundry. These stains can be difficult to remove and create an overall unpleasant appearance. Imagine trying to enjoy a relaxing bath in a tub stained with rust – not very appealing!

  • Plumbing and Appliance Damage: Iron doesn't just affect the surfaces it touches; it can also wreak havoc on your plumbing system. Iron buildup can clog pipes, reduce water pressure, and even damage water heaters and other appliances. Replacing plumbing and appliances can be a costly endeavor, making iron removal a wise investment.

How Do Iron Filters Work?

Iron filters utilize various methods to remove excess iron from your well water, and understanding these mechanisms will help you choose the right filter for your specific needs.

  • Aeration (Air Injection) Filters: These systems introduce oxygen into the water, causing dissolved ferrous iron (clear water iron) to oxidize and transform into ferric iron (rust particles). The oxidized iron is then trapped by a filter media, typically a bed of specialized sand or other material. Aeration systems are often effective for a wide range of iron concentrations.

  • Oxidation Filters: Similar to aeration, oxidation filters use oxidizing media to convert ferrous iron to ferric iron. However, instead of air, they utilize materials like manganese greensand or Birm. These filters are typically more compact and require less maintenance than aeration systems.

  • Water Softeners with Iron Removal: Some water softeners incorporate iron removal capabilities, but they are primarily designed to remove hardness minerals like calcium and magnesium. If your well water is both hard and contains iron, a combination system might be worth considering, but it's important to consult with a water treatment professional to determine the best approach.

Choosing the Right Iron Filter on a Budget

Selecting the ideal iron filter for your well water requires careful consideration of several factors:

  • Water Testing is Essential: Before you invest in any filter, it's crucial to have your well water professionally tested. A comprehensive water analysis will reveal not only the iron level but also the type of iron (ferrous, ferric, or bacterial), pH level, hardness, and other potential contaminants. This information is essential for selecting the most effective filter for your specific situation.

  • Budget Considerations: Iron filters vary significantly in price, from a few hundred dollars for basic DIY models to several thousand dollars for whole-house systems. Determine your budget upfront and explore options within that range. Remember that the cheapest option isn't always the best; consider the long-term costs of filter media replacement and potential maintenance.

  • DIY vs. Professional Installation: Some iron filters are designed for easy DIY installation, while others require professional expertise. If you're comfortable with basic plumbing, a DIY filter can save you money on installation costs. However, complex systems might be best left to the professionals to ensure proper setup and functionality.

Additional Tips for Well Water on a Budget

  • Water Softening: If your well water is both hard (containing high levels of calcium and magnesium) and has iron, you might need a water softener in addition to an iron filter. Hard water can cause its own set of problems, such as scale buildup in pipes and appliances, dry skin, and soap scum. A water softener will remove hardness minerals, while an iron filter will address the iron issue.

  • Other Well Water Problems: Well water can sometimes contain other contaminants like manganese, sulfur, or bacteria. Each of these requires specific treatment methods. If your water test reveals additional contaminants, consult with a water treatment professional to determine the best course of action.

  • DIY Maintenance Tips: Even if you opt for professional installation, you can save money by performing some basic maintenance tasks yourself. This might include cleaning sediment filters, checking valves, and monitoring your water quality for changes.

By following these tips and investing in an affordable iron filter, you can ensure that your well water is clean, clear, and safe for you and your family to enjoy.

Understanding Iron in Well Water: Why It's a Problem and How to Fix It

Have you noticed rust-colored stains in your sinks, a metallic taste in your water, or an unsettling orange tint? These are common signs of elevated iron levels in your well water. While iron is naturally occurring and essential for human health in small amounts, excessive concentrations can lead to a range of issues, from cosmetic concerns to potential health risks. In this comprehensive guide, we will delve into the causes and effects of iron in well water, provide actionable steps for testing and treatment, and equip you with the knowledge to safeguard your home and health.

Understanding Iron in Well Water: A Deeper Dive

Iron in well water is a prevalent issue, especially in regions with iron-rich soil and rock formations. As groundwater percolates through these layers, it dissolves iron, carrying it into your well. To effectively address this issue, it's crucial to understand the different types of iron that can contaminate your water supply.

What Types of Iron Lurk in My Well?

  • Ferrous Iron (Fe2+): This is the most common form of iron found in well water. It's dissolved and invisible to the naked eye, giving the water a clear appearance. However, when exposed to air, ferrous iron oxidizes into ferric iron, leading to those telltale rust-colored stains.
  • Ferric Iron (Fe3+): This is the oxidized form of iron and is responsible for the reddish-brown or orange discoloration of water. It's insoluble, meaning it doesn't dissolve, and can appear as visible particles or sediment.
  • Organic Iron: Also known as collodial iron, this type is bound to organic matter like tannins or humic acids. It's more challenging to remove than other forms and can cause yellow or brown staining.
  • Bacterial Iron: Some bacteria thrive in iron-rich environments. These microorganisms can cause a slimy buildup in pipes and create an unpleasant swampy odor in your water.

Each type of iron presents unique challenges in terms of detection and removal. It's important to identify the specific type(s) present in your well water to determine the most appropriate treatment method.

How Does Iron Get into My Well Water?

Iron contamination primarily occurs due to natural geological processes. As water travels through underground rock and soil, it picks up minerals, including iron. The concentration of iron can vary depending on the geology of your area. For example, areas with high levels of iron ore deposits or acidic soils are more likely to have elevated iron levels in groundwater.

Additionally, the construction of your well can contribute to iron problems. If your well casing or pipes are made of iron or steel, corrosion can release iron particles into the water. This is more common in older wells or those with damaged casings.

The Unpleasant Effects of Iron-Laden Water

Is My Orange Well Water Safe to Drink? Potential Health Risks

The presence of iron in well water raises concerns about its safety for consumption. While iron is an essential nutrient, excessive amounts can lead to health problems. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that concentrations exceeding 0.3 mg/L can cause an unpleasant metallic taste and discoloration, making the water unpalatable.

In terms of health risks, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established a secondary maximum contaminant level (SMCL) for iron at 0.3 mg/L. This level is not enforceable but serves as a guideline for aesthetic considerations. However, long-term consumption of water with high iron levels can potentially lead to issues like:

  • Gastrointestinal Problems: Stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and constipation.
  • Liver Damage: In severe cases, especially with prolonged exposure to very high levels.

It's important to note that these health effects are primarily associated with very high levels of iron and long-term exposure. However, it's always recommended to test your well water and consult with a healthcare professional if you have concerns about the safety of your drinking water.

Rusty Pipes and Stained Laundry: The Household Havoc of Iron

Beyond health concerns, iron in well water wreaks havoc on your household plumbing and appliances. The most visible signs are the stubborn rust-colored stains that appear on sinks, tubs, toilets, and laundry. These stains are difficult to remove and can detract from the appearance of your fixtures.

Iron buildup can also clog pipes, reducing water pressure and potentially leading to costly repairs. Appliances like dishwashers and washing machines can be damaged by iron deposits, leading to premature wear and tear and reduced efficiency.

Moreover, iron can promote the growth of iron bacteria, which create a slimy buildup in pipes and emit an unpleasant odor. This can further exacerbate clogging issues and contribute to poor water quality.

Testing and Treating Iron in Well Water: Your Action Plan

How Do I Know if I Have an Iron Problem? Testing Your Water

If you suspect iron in your well water, the first step is to get it tested. You have a few options:

  1. Home Test Kits: These are readily available and relatively inexpensive. They can provide a general idea of the iron level in your water, but they may not differentiate between the different types of iron.

  2. Professional Laboratory Testing: For a more accurate and comprehensive analysis, it's recommended to have your water tested by a certified laboratory. These labs can identify the specific types of iron present and their concentrations, which is crucial for determining the most effective treatment method. The National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Program (NELAP) accredits laboratories that meet stringent quality standards for water testing.

When collecting water samples for testing, it's essential to follow proper procedures to ensure accurate results. If you're unsure how to collect samples correctly, consult with your local health department or a water testing professional.

Which Iron Filter is Right for Me? Choosing the Best Treatment Solution

The optimal treatment method for iron in well water depends on several factors, including:

  • Type of Iron: Different types of iron require different treatment approaches. For example, ferrous iron is often removed with oxidation filters, while ferric iron may require filtration or settling.
  • Iron Concentration: The level of iron in your water will determine the size and type of treatment system needed.
  • Water Usage: Your household's water consumption will influence the capacity and flow rate requirements of the system.
  • Budget: Iron removal systems vary in price, so consider your budget when making a decision.

Here's an overview of common iron removal methods:

  • Oxidation Filters: These systems introduce air or chemicals like chlorine or potassium permanganate to oxidize ferrous iron into ferric iron, which is then filtered out.
  • Ion Exchange Water Softeners: These systems are effective for removing low to moderate levels of ferrous iron and can also soften hard water.
  • Manganese Greensand Filters: These filters use a special media coated with manganese oxide to remove iron and manganese through oxidation and filtration.
  • Aeration Systems: Aeration involves injecting air into the water to oxidize ferrous iron, which then precipitates out and can be filtered.

When selecting an iron filter, research reputable brands like Kinetico, SoftPro Water Systems, or SpringWell Water Filtration Systems, known for their quality and effectiveness. It's also crucial to consult with a water treatment professional to determine the best system for your specific needs and budget.

Beyond Treatment: Preventing Future Iron Issues

While treating existing iron problems is essential, preventing future contamination is equally important. Here are some proactive measures you can take:

  • Regular Well Maintenance: Schedule annual inspections and maintenance of your well by a qualified professional. This can help identify and address potential issues before they escalate.
  • Shock Chlorination: Periodic shock chlorination of your well can help control iron bacteria growth.
  • Proper Well Construction: If you're drilling a new well or replacing an old one, ensure that the well casing and pipes are made of materials resistant to corrosion, such as stainless steel or PVC.
  • Manage pH Levels: Maintaining proper pH levels in your well water can help prevent iron from dissolving and entering your water supply.

By taking these preventive measures, you can significantly reduce the risk of future iron contamination and ensure the longevity of your well and water treatment system.

Understanding and addressing iron in well water is crucial for maintaining a clean, healthy, and efficient water supply for your home. By following the information and recommendations in this guide, you can effectively tackle iron problems and enjoy the benefits of high-quality water for years to come.

An iron filter is a water treatment system specifically designed to remove excess iron from well water. If you're one of the millions of homeowners who rely on a private well for water, you've likely encountered the frustrating effects of iron. From unsightly stains on your fixtures and laundry to the unpleasant metallic taste in your drinking water, iron can wreak havoc on your home and daily life. That's where iron filters come in – they're your key to cleaner, tastier, and safer water.

Not only does iron-rich water leave unsightly stains on sinks, tubs, and toilets, but it can also damage your plumbing system over time. Iron buildup can clog pipes, reduce water pressure, and even lead to costly repairs. In addition, the metallic taste and odor of iron can make your water unpalatable, discouraging you and your family from drinking enough fluids. We'll explore the signs that indicate you need an iron filter, the various types available, and how to choose the best one for your specific needs.

The Iron Problem: Signs You Need a Filter

How can you tell if your well water needs an iron filter? Here are the telltale signs:

  1. Rusty Stains: The most obvious indicator is the presence of reddish-brown stains on your sinks, bathtubs, showers, and toilets. These stains can be difficult to remove and are a constant source of frustration. You might also notice rust-colored stains on your laundry, even after washing with detergent.

  2. Metallic Taste or Odor: Does your water taste or smell like metal? This is a common complaint among well water users and a clear sign of excess iron. Not only is this unpleasant, but it can also deter you from drinking enough water, potentially leading to dehydration.

  3. Clogged Pipes and Appliances: If you notice a decrease in water pressure or find that your appliances like water heaters and dishwashers are not working as efficiently as before, iron buildup could be the culprit. Iron particles can accumulate in pipes and appliances, causing blockages and reducing their lifespan.

  4. Red, Brown, or Yellow Water: In severe cases, you might even see discoloration in the water itself. This is a sure sign of high iron levels and requires immediate attention.

According to the Water Quality Association (WQA), a well water iron concentration of 0.3 milligrams per liter (mg/L) or more is considered problematic. A recent study by the U.S. Geological Survey found that approximately 11% of private wells in the United States exceed this threshold.

Types of Iron Filters: How They Work and Which One is Right for You

Iron filters work by either converting dissolved iron into a solid form that can be filtered out or by oxidizing the iron and then filtering it out. There are several types of iron filters available, each with its own advantages and limitations. Let's take a closer look at the most common types:

  • Oxidizing Filters: These filters use a medium, such as Birm, Greensand, or synthetic media like Pro-OX, to oxidize ferrous iron (dissolved iron) into ferric iron (solid iron). The oxidized iron then precipitates out of the water and is trapped by the filter media. Oxidizing filters are effective for treating moderate levels of iron and are relatively low maintenance.

  • Backwashing Filters: These filters use a similar process to oxidizing filters but have the added advantage of automatically or manually backwashing to remove the accumulated iron. Backwashing helps to prevent the filter media from becoming clogged, extending its lifespan. These filters are suitable for higher iron levels and offer convenience for homeowners.

  • Whole House vs. Point-of-Entry Filters: A whole-house iron filter is installed at the main water line entering your home, treating all the water used in your household. A point-of-entry filter, on the other hand, is installed at a specific point of use, such as under your kitchen sink, and only treats the water used at that location. The choice between these two depends on your specific needs and budget.

Filter Type
How it Works
Pros
Cons
Oxidizing Filter
Oxidizes iron into a solid form for filtration
Effective for moderate levels of iron, low maintenance
May not be suitable for high iron levels, requires periodic media replacement
Backwashing Filter
Oxidizes and filters iron, automatically or manually flushes out accumulated iron
Suitable for higher iron levels, longer media lifespan, convenient
Higher initial cost, more complex installation
Whole House Filter
Treats all water entering the home
Protects plumbing and appliances, improves water quality throughout the house
Higher cost, may not be necessary if iron is only a problem at specific locations
Point-of-Entry Filter
Treats water at a specific location
Lower cost, targeted treatment for drinking/cooking water
Does not protect plumbing or appliances, multiple filters may be needed for different uses Choosing the Best Iron Filter for Your Well Water

Selecting the ideal iron filter involves considering several key factors:

  1. Iron Levels: The amount of iron in your water, measured in parts per million (ppm), is the most critical factor. Higher iron concentrations require more powerful filters.

  2. Water Flow Rate: This is the amount of water that passes through your plumbing system in a given time, typically measured in gallons per minute (GPM). Your filter needs to be able to handle your household's water flow rate.

  3. Type of Iron: Iron can be present in two forms – ferrous (dissolved) and ferric (solid). Some filters are better suited for one form than the other.

  4. Budget: Iron filters vary significantly in price. Determine your budget beforehand to narrow down your options.

Before purchasing a filter, it's crucial to have your well water professionally tested. A water quality analysis will provide accurate information about the iron levels and other potential contaminants in your water, allowing you to choose the most appropriate filter.

Top-Rated Iron Filter Brands

Some of the most reputable iron filter brands include:

  • SpringWell: Known for their whole-house air injection oxidizing filters, SpringWell offers efficient and reliable iron removal solutions for various well water conditions.

  • SoftPro: SoftPro Water systems utilize a multi-stage filtration process that removes not only iron but also other contaminants like manganese and sulfur.

  • Culligan: With a long history in water treatment, Culligan offers a wide range of iron filters, including options for both residential and commercial applications.

  • Hellenbrand: Hellenbrand specializes in innovative iron filtration technologies, such as their patented Iron Curtain system, which combines ozone and air injection for superior performance.

  • American Water Technologies: This company offers a variety of iron filters, including models specifically designed for iron bacteria and sulfur bacteria.

Installing and Maintaining Your Iron Filter

The complexity of iron filter installation depends on the type of system you choose. While some point-of-entry filters can be installed by homeowners with basic DIY skills, whole-house systems often require professional installation due to their connection to the main water line.

Regular maintenance is essential to keep your iron filter functioning optimally. This includes:

  • Backwashing: If you have a backwashing filter, follow the manufacturer's instructions for how often to initiate the backwashing cycle. This process flushes out the accumulated iron and other debris from the filter media.

  • Filter Media Replacement: The filter media in your iron filter will eventually become saturated and need to be replaced. The lifespan of the media depends on the type of filter and the iron levels in your water.

  • Troubleshooting: If you notice issues like low water pressure, leaks, or changes in water quality, consult the manufacturer's troubleshooting guide or contact a professional for assistance.

Beyond Iron: Other Well Water Concerns

While iron is a common issue in well water, it's not the only one. Other contaminants that may be present include:

  • Hard Water: This is caused by high levels of calcium and magnesium, which can lead to soap scum, scale buildup, and dry skin and hair. A water softener can be used in conjunction with an iron filter to address this problem.

  • pH Levels: Low pH (acidic) water can corrode pipes and fixtures. An acid neutralizer can raise the pH level to a safe range.

  • Bacteria and Other Contaminants: Depending on your location and well conditions, your water may contain bacteria, nitrates, arsenic, or other harmful substances. Additional filtration systems or treatments may be necessary to ensure your water is safe for consumption.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • How often should I change my iron filter media? The frequency of media replacement depends on the type of filter and the amount of iron in your water. Consult your manufacturer's recommendations for specific guidelines. Generally, Birm media may need replacement every 3-5 years, while Greensand may last 5-10 years.

  • Can I use an iron filter with city water? Iron filters are designed for well water, which typically has higher iron levels than city water. However, if your city water has a noticeable iron problem, a point-of-entry filter might be beneficial for drinking and cooking water.

  • Does an iron filter remove bacteria? No, standard iron filters are not designed to remove bacteria. If you have concerns about bacterial contamination in your well water, a UV disinfection system is often recommended.
  • How much does an iron filter cost? The price of an iron filter varies depending on the type of filter, brand, size, and features. Point-of-entry filters typically range from $100 to $500, while whole-house systems can cost anywhere from $500 to $3000 or more. Professional installation costs should also be factored in.

Choosing the right iron filter for your well water is an investment in the health and comfort of your family. By understanding the types of filters available, considering your specific water conditions, and investing in a reputable brand, you can enjoy cleaner, tastier, and safer water for years to come.

Remember, professional water testing is crucial for accurate iron level assessment and determining the most suitable filtration system for your home. With the right iron filter, you can say goodbye to rusty stains, metallic tastes, and plumbing woes, and enjoy the many benefits of clean, refreshing well water.

Changed Into His Image, Ch. 5

Stephanie

"Mortifying Your Flesh"

Mortifying me. Making dead those impulsively sinful responses and thoughts. Giving no power to my self-centered, self-inclined, self-indulgent, self. Boy, this is a deep operation.

1. What is the opposite of mortify? (p. 90)
“Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. For you are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God…Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth. (Col. 3:3,5)
 My affection often lies with doing things that bring me the praise of peers. If I can squeeze in an extra project to wow the audience then I will look competent and creative. My affection is not focused on Christ and His will for me, but on shining the spotlight on myself.
 Mortifying my flesh in this regard means only taking on those projects that will fulfill God’s will for me: make me a better help meet, mother or servant to others. And that line can get pretty blurry b/c there are a lot of needy people out there. But I must be discerning and choose the best projects/uses of my time.
2. What are my current battles of sin that need mortification? (p. 92)
I took a moment to do what the author said: “…take some time to identify the battles you are facing right now. Perhaps write them down. You need to have specific struggles of the flesh in mind when you go through this chapter.” So I wrote down the following:
 Joy in marriage
 Contentment with submitting to Jay when I would lead differently
 Anger and impatience with M&M
 Laziness in housework
 Overspending on trivial things
 Over-committing to projects that distract me from my family
I think all these root sins are listed in that section of verses in Romans 1---where all men are condemned for being totally depraved!

3. What happens when I try to fix these problems on my own? (pp. 96-97)
In the same way that I cannot justify myself, sanctify myself or glorify (eternally) myself, so I cannot mortify myself without the help of the Spirit.
 The “brakes of self-discipline will give out and [I] will crash anyway.” Just like cutting out sugar from my diet. I can only go so long successfully before my self-discipline wears out and I eat a whole box of Junior Mints….and half a Cadbury’s Toffee cream bar. Hmmm. I just confessed for last night.
 “[I] will make decisions about what [I] will or will not do based upon how [I] feel at the moment—not by the facts of what God has said is reality.” When I am feeling good and strong and full of energy, I make wise and right decisions about my family and marriage; but when I am over-worked, over-committed, over-stressed and generally over-the-top, I am unpleasant, mean, caustic and impatient. That’s not to mention how I respond to my need for exercise! 

4. How can I NOT feed my flesh? (p. 101)
Honestly, sometimes I know when I am indulging my sinful habits. I turn off my conscience and just wallow. But sometimes, when I liken myself to Lot, I don’t know how to extricate myself from an environment that will tempt me to sin and be impatient.
 “To begin with, his (Kirk’s) soul was worn down daily by the wickedness of the people around him at work. He was daily exposed to ungodly attitudes, conversation, values, and temptations. Like Lot (and me), his justified soul was ‘vexed’ (literally worn down or tortured) ‘from day to day with their unlawful deeds.” I am living with 2 little sinners and their constant acquiescing to sin makes it a spiritual hot house for me! I do feel like Lot, worn down by the sinfulness of those unsaved people around him.
 “Consequently, his work was not a joy to him.” I battle this too. If I could only live with joyful, spirit-minded people, I would enjoy my work more! Right. That’s pie-in-the-sky thinking. Even if I worked with perfect people, I would still end up being disgusted with my own wickedness and bent toward sin.

Changed Into His Image, CH. 4

Jan's thoughts / notes
Getting In Your Place--Jeremiah 2:12-13

1. Scriptures are clear that our OWN WAY (Jer. 2:19) will not work, the fact that it won't work is God's secondary concern. Forsaking God is the first and the most wicked of the two evils God enumerates in the above passage! (p. 67)

2. There is stability and joy that God gives to those who put their trust in Him rather than in their own devices. (Ps. 16:36)

3. Creation inherently demands dependency (Ps. 100:3). I must face my dependence upon my Creator, repent of my proud ways/attempts to make life work my OWN WAY, and submit to HIS way. (p. 69)

4. Humility--
If I have been humbled before God, I am no longer self-justifying, self-protective, or self-confident. My habitual frame of mind should be one that not only feels I owe all my natural gifts to God but that I have been the object of undeserved redeeming love and I regard myself as being God's alone, in Christ (II Cor. 3:5; 4:7). (p. 73)

How God Humbles Us (p. 77-83)
...He can send us a problem we can't handle to expose our helplessness...II Kings 5
...He can give us a command we won't obey to expose our self-centeredness...II Kings 14:25
...He can arrange an outcome we can't control to expose our sinfulness...II Sam. 11-12
...He can show us a God we can't comprehend to expose our finiteness...Job 1-4

5. Matthew 5:3; 18:3-4 (p. 73)
I am nothing apart from Him.
I am sinful and need His mercy.
I am insufficient and need His grace.

Changed Into His Image, Ch. 3

Jan's Thoughts/Notes

Identifying Your Own Way

1) I was born with the same basic sinful heart that demands to have it's own way, every day, as everyone else.

We all have our own unique combinations. The rebellion of our own way manifests itself differently in each of us! (p. 50) I Cor. 10:13

I must acknowledge and identify my own way so that I can effectively uproot and destroy that sin in my life or it will continue to re-root and manifest ugliness (sin) in my life.

In this chapter Berg is precise and concise about the different types of rebellion, or "own ways" as he states it. He outlines 3 specific rebels within all of us with a few sub-rebels within each.

I. The Assertive Rebel (out-spoken and/or in-your-face)

II. The Cooperative Rebel (I will obey since it gets me what I want)

  • Compliant rebel--ultimately will obey, but slow
  • Duty-oriented rebel--the "good kid" wants to be the best and get the recognition

III. The Passive Rebel (the victim)

  • "I can't obey"
  • "I forgot to obey"
  • "I didn't know to obey"

2) My flesh wants to usurp God's control and replace it with my own way. In James 1 he talks specifically about being tempted to sin and have my own way...he teaching is that the source of the temptation is not from above (from God), but within man--from his own lusts. (p. 50)

3) Is There Any Hope?

Yes!!

I Cor. 6:11 "And such were some of you: but ye were washed, but ye were sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God."

II Cor. 5:17 "new creature" (each of us has been fundamentally changed by the Spirit of God!)

Galatians 5 talks about the putting off (works of the flesh) and the putting on (fruit of the Spirit). There is no problem that God's Word does not address in the Scriptures (p. 57)

I must become accustomed to looking beyond my own behavior and emotions and ask myself, "What is the ruling lust in my heart right now that is driving this behavior or emotion?" (p. 58)

The problem is in the heart of man, not his circumstances (p. 64) How easily I become the 'victim' and give excuses for the way I respond outwardly or the way I feel inwardly. In many circumstances, I justify my sin with excuses.

4) John Owen on Knowing Your Heart

"Is is not enough to watch our circumstances to detect the times of
temptation. We must also watch our heart to know when temptation might
approach us. We need to know our own heart...!"

"Unless we are conscious of these propensities, relationships, and dynamic
possibilities, temptation will constantly entangle us. This is why it is
so important to know ourselves--our temperaments and our attitudes."

"How few truly seek to know themselves, or posses the courage to do so."
(Owen, Sin, 130-132)

5) A Note on: Warring Children

"They certainly need to be confronted about their fighting; but more
fundamentally they need to be confronted about the underlying desire of the heart
that prompted the fight....Merely insisting that the warring parties get along or
separating them fro a period of time may stop the fight, but it will not solve
the real problem--their ruling lust, which is a part of their own way of making
life work for them." (p. 64)

"Not only must that ruling lust be identified and confronted in their
lives, but the offenders must also ask forgiveness of it from God and from those
they are wronging before lasting biblical change can take place. It is
not even enough for the individual to see his ruling list and acknowledge that
he has a problem in that area. Unless he repents with the intention of
forsaking, his fellowship with god remains broken and there will be no lasting
change." (p. 64)

Num. 15:39-40--God was concerned for Israel's heart!

The pull of indwelling sin in my own heart has a deadly effect on my human heart (p. 65)

Changed Into His Image, Ch. 3

"Identifying Your Own Way"

What is my own way? Having to identify specific sinful patterns in my attitude, behavior and general nature was...um...painful. And although I have known about my propensity to sin in certain areas, now having to actually own them, admit them and seek to forsake them is a whole different ballgame.

1. I am The Cooperative Rebel (p. 52)
I choose to cooperate in my marriage, and even with my children, in order to get what I want, which is usually: peace.
 “(My) own way is to comply while retaining the right to protest.” I will acquiesce with Jay or bargain with my children but still harbor resentment that I am not getting exactly what I want or receiving the response that I think I should be getting. If things don’t turn out well, I can easily fall back on, “I didn’t say anything earlier, but I would have said….”
 I “…can become easily embittered during the times when (I am) being good and don’t get what (I) want.” It is especially difficult when I think I deserve a pat on the back, a recognition for my sacrifices, a commendation for a job well done…but all is quiet on the home-front. True humility, according to Andrew Murray, is to be at rest when nobody praises me, or when I am blamed or despised.

2. I am mothering two Passive Rebels (p. 54)
“I can’t obey”, “I forgot to obey” and “I didn’t know to obey” are the first, middle and last names of my beloved children. No one taught them to rebel; they do it naturally and quite often.
 Mason often says, “I can’t obey” when he does not have the will to obey. It shows his indifference to my command or his resistance to obeying my command.
 Madeline is a mix of the “I forgot to obey” and the “I didn’t know to obey”. She chooses to be lazy and not follow through with her obedience or she is choosing to be intentionally ignorant of the rules.

3. Is There Hope? (p. 55)
YES! “There is no problem that God’s Word doesn’t address in the Scriptures. All of the masks of rebellion and the sinful behaviors and attitudes…can be changed.”
 Always naming the root/heart issue of the sinful behavior is the best place to start. And dealing with the core sin is the only way to conquer it! Learning how to resist the sin/temptation will require much prayer and vigilance on my/their part.

4. John Owen on Knowing Your Heart (p. 58)
“’Unless we are conscious of these propensities, relationships, and dynamic possibilities, temptation will constantly entangle us. This is why it is so important to know ourselves—our temperaments and our attitudes.’”
 When I am “low”, that is, hungry or extremely tired, I know I am prone to being impatient, responding in anger or simply willing to give in to my children’s requests. I must preempt that propensity by eating regularly and not cramming my schedule to full that I am too exhausted to respond biblically at the end of the day.
 Although physical needs play a part in my temptation to sin, it is not the true reason why I sin. (See notes below.)

5. What is the Ruling Lust? (p. 63)
“The problem is in the heart of man, not in his circumstances
 Separating children, venting to my husband, or acquiescing may “stop the fight”, but it will not solve the ultimate problem. This is the proverbial band-aid on the gunshot wound.
 To stop the hemorrhage, I must repent (or help my children to name their own sins) with the intention of forsaking my sin. And I must place this example before my husband and children so they may see my desire to change and be willing to change, too.

Changed Into His Image, Ch. 2

Jan's Thoughts/Notes:

Recognizing the Evil Within

1) Understanding MY Sinful Heart
  • I am sinful (Rom. 1-3)
  • I need to be saved (Rom. 4-5)
  • I can be sanctified (Rom. 6-8)

There is only ONE way--to be redeemed (purchased) by the blood of Christ--salvation, from eternal separation from God, by His grace (death on the cross) through faith (my belief).

2) The Nature of MY Nature

  • My biggest problem is a heart that wants it's own way--all the time.
  • My ways and His ways are mutually exclusive
  • My sin separates me from Him. It blinds my understanding and without the Spirit within me, I cannot comprehend spiritual things.
  • My heart is deceptive. I was born with a heart against God.

3) Why is MY "flesh" Deceitful?

  • Sin generates lies. Lies about life that conceal the reality. Once sin has deceived the mind, I am sure to sin.
  • The will (my will) chooses what appears to be good to my affections bc the mind has been deceived by my sin (Rom. 7:23)

4) My Flesh is Death (Jms 1:15; Rom. 8:13)

  • The Serpent's design is to separate the believer from the Lord's fellowship
  • The enemy seeks to separate my body & soul--rendering it useless to Christ
  • An unrestrained sinful heart is destructive! Rom. 3:10-18; 8:13

5) God's Word MUST be MY Authority

  • If I refuse to acknowledge my authorities desire to rule, I am rejecting God's Way. That in itself is ruling my life at that moment
  • I must practice making decisions that are wise (in line with God's way)
  • I must humble myself before God and acknowledge His right to superintend ALL my choices

So What?

  1. If left alone I would destroy myself--I MUST recognize God's convicting and chastising Word and confront my sin!
  2. I MUST humble myself when God exposes sin or their will be no biblical change in my life.
  3. God will mercifully keep exposing my sin that would ultimately keep me from being productive for Him.

Changed Into His Image, Ch. 2

Stephanie's thoughts:

“Getting the view of man right” p. 26-27
1. The quote by Charles Williams about a Christian’s understanding of the heinousness of sin and its power to corrupt every view of man, society, counseling and the Evangelist’s job.
 When I counsel someone or seek to instruct my children, it seems that the place I typically start (right or wrong) is “What is the sin issue?” Until that question is answered there cannot be a true diagnosis or real change implemented.
 My sin often corrupts my view of myself, the depth of my sin and even my own understanding of the depth of sin in someone else’s life…like Madeline or Mason or Jay. It’s difficult to live so closely with someone and still see clearly, not being blinded by either love or bitterness.

“Have it your way” p. 34
2. “The Devil did not tempt Adam and Eve to steal, to lie, to kill, to commit adultery; he tempted them to live independent of God.”
 All women rebel at the idea of obedience to their husband. It grates against our spirit. It is our curse to desire our husband’s authority and position of headship. We want to live independent of him because his restrictions are confining, not comforting, so we selfishly think.
 When I refuse to own up to my sins, or even shortcomings, before Jay, it is, at its heart, an unwillingness to be dependent on him. I do not want to admit I am weak or in need of more leadership. I will always choose the path of less leadership.

“The flesh defiles man” p. 38
3. “How frequently do we rush through our day making decision after decision, touching lives in this way or that, with no thought of what corruption has tainted those decisions? Are they decisions that ‘cannot please God’? How have we defiled those with whom we have companied?”
 I think it would be impossible to stop before making every decision in order to give it a full “think through”. I believe God is gracious and allows us to live freely and wisely, making decisions here and there, but requiring that we be spiritually prepared for the implications of those decisions.
 If I allow Madeline to stay up late one night and then scold her for being overly emotional the next day or two, I did not bear the responsibility of the decision I made on her behalf. Or if I choose not to clean my house and instead go to Target to get something minor and end up walking around for an hour, that decision is tainted with the sin of procrastination and laziness. If I choose to talk in frustration about my husband or children to others, I probably corrupted them with poor thoughts of my family as well as defamed my dear husband in front of them. It might even cause them to think poorly of their family or make them feel angry with mine for treating me “unfairly”.

“The flesh destroys man” p. 42
4. “We ought to pray, ‘Dear God, limit me, bind me, restrict me, Do whatever you have to, but please don’t let me have my own way.’”
 Ouch. How often I want to believe that my way is God’s way. But my ways are not His ways, my thoughts are not His thoughts. Even at their most holiest, my ways and thoughts are still not aligned with His and are often contrary to what He would think.
 This makes Scriptures that instructs me to say, “If the Lord wills”, or “If this is pleasing to God” more relevant and powerful. If I want something that is contrary to His will, then I will be having my own way…and that can only lead to hardship and heartache. Following Jay’s lead on many issues as well as leaning on a multitude of counselors is a good buffer from my erring in my requests.

“Can’t stand the sight of blood?” p. 45
5. Instead of shielding a child or fellow believer from the consequences of his wrong choices, parents and others who are attempting to help him must not put themselves at cross-purposes to what God is doing in the situation. There will be no biblical change in the one we are trying to help unless he humbles himself when God exposes his sin.”
 I am a people pleaser. I feel guilty when I am able to help someone in need and cannot. It causes me anger when Jay puts restrictions on me when I’m seeking to help others. I must realize that Jay’s restrictions may be the Lord’s keeping me from shielding someone who needs to experience God’s pruning or discipline.
 I often try to play the mediator between my family and Jay. I feel stuck in the middle when either side has a complaint about the other. I try to patch it up or smooth it over for everyone. I feel guilty by saying to the offended/frustrated party, “If you feel that way, please go and speak to him/her. By telling me you are putting me in the middle and tempting me to be frustrated or angry when I’ve not been offended.” I cannot be in the middle; I am on the side of my husband, even if that means hurting my family. God will bless that position because He made me to be one flesh with Jay, not them.

Currently Reading -- Changed Into His Image

Jan

It's been almost a year since I have last attempted a post on this blog...I ended up deleting the 'draft' and removed the pressure I put on myself to post the notes and thoughts on the last 2 books I read.

I would love to continue using this blog to post my thoughts and notes on the books that I am reading (for personal growth and maturing). I'll leave off the others that are merely for pleasure; you can visit my personal blog and take a look at my bookshelf there if you are interested in knowing the other books I subject myself and time to.

For this current read my goal is to post 5 points/thoughts extracted from each chapter...no more and no less (this is something that Burg suggests specifically in the first chapter) and I believe will be a reasonable goal for me to maintain.

I have not mentioned the renewal of this blog to either of the other two 'club' members, but I do invite them to post their findings too! Feel free to follow along with us using the posted reading schedule...I'd love to hear your comments. If you'd like permission to "POST" let me know and I will add you to this blogs list of authors.

Helpmeet--Ch. 15 & 16; Jan-Maree

I am enjoying this section of the book with all it's micro specifics!

CH. 15: To Be Sober
As we know, Debi is examining Titus 2:3-5 KJV verses in these next several chapters in the book.
"The aged women likewise, that they be in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed."
I am thankful for her time in words with the definition of 'blaspheme'. It made it real for me, not just cursing or swearing or anger towards the Holy Spirit, but also putting oneself above God, either by what you say or by what you do. Using one of the links that Jessica posted back in April.

BLASPHE'ME, v.t. [Gr. The first syllable is the same as in blame, blasme, denoting injury; L. loedo, loesus; The last syllable is the Gr.,to speak.]

1. To speak of the Supreme Being in terms of impious irreverence; to revile or speak reproachfully of God, or the Holy Spirit. 1 Kings 21. Mark 3.

2. To speak evil of; to utter abuse or calumny against; to speak reproachfully of.

BLASPHE'ME, v.i. To utter blasphemy.

He that shall blaspheme against the Holy Spirit shall not be forgiven. Mark 3.

1. To arrogate the prerogatives of God.

This man blasphemeth. Who can forgive sins but God? Math.9. Mark 2.

blasphemer

BLASPHE'MER, n. One who blasphemes; one who speaks of God in impious and irreverent terms. 1 Tim.1.

Specifically in this chapter, I truly enjoyed the practical tips that she shares. I was stung by the truth, "A sober wife makes herself the match of every circumstance." (p 148)
Debi states it so plainly. Even if I have not used 9 out of the 10 excuses that she says women use for not completing their simple tasks, I felt humbled. I know that the craziness that I feel at times is 99% in my control. Simply stated, "It is the lack of simple planning." (p 150)
I am challenged to try her crop-pot meals for the week...just to try it! I love the crock-pot but I do not use it as a daily help. She makes it appealing!
"Sometimes, maintaining a good relationship with your husband simply requires the performing of simple tasks, like having a food meal ready on time and a clean house, even when it is not convenient to do so." (p 151)

CH. 16: To Love Their Husbands
Not a whole lot I want to share from this chapter via the blog...though, I was hoping there would be a note or a letter or something that addressed the situation--the other way around!
However, I do agree with the one-side that she presented. There are a lot of women out there with low-body image and low self esteem that use every excuse in the book!

We spent quite some time on this chapter before getting to CH. 17 with the gals who were here this past week. Thank you, to those who were here Friday, you were an encouragement to me and my efforts with this group :-)

One quote from this chapter that I appreciated from Debi, "When you truly love and reverence your husband, the very thought of him loving the likes of you should thrill your soul and make you long to cause him pleasure."

*Side Note: Was anyone as dumb struck, saddened, angry, frustrated, at Mr. Miller's letter on p. 167 as I?

Helpmeet--Ch. 16; Jen

Hi Jan,
I'm trying to get caught up! Thanks for holding me accountable. I'm going to start going through this book with one of my counselees and I'm super thrilled about it but she's already mad at the book. LOL! Isn't that great! God is going to move in her heart and I just know it! Thank you for taking the calling to lead this discussion group. I hope that you have a great turn out at your home and I do hope a few more come on here....I'm feeling a bit lonely. Hopefully you can jump back in soon, Jessica, once you are settled a bit. =0) Know you are missed!

Wow, what a great chapter! I don't have much to say other than I wish more women would write on this topic. I've read several books on this topic and they were all written by men! I'm anxious to read the other book the Pearl's wrote called Holy Sex and see what they have to say in more detail. I've counseled women on this topic and it would be great if more writers out there wrote like Debi does about it. I've heard it all....."I just don't like it....", "It doesn't do anything for me", "I don't get anything out of it", "I'll never initiate it...my husband just has to live with that", and so on. It would be nice to have more resources to address these issues and this chapter is a great place to start. I love that Debi makes it clear that women need to do what they can to find a way to make it enjoyable and go into it with joy. Women who struggle with it need to take the initiative to solve their apathy for their husband's sake. The only thing that came to mind that Debi didn't mention directly but more indirectly is that women need to initiate things some of the time. Not just "available" but "initiating". It tells a man that he's worth being pursued. If we think that being available can do magic, initiating it is ten times greater.

Personally it made me really grateful. We started out as a really young couple pretty innocent and without a lot of info on the subject and by submitting to the Lord in our marriage, I believe He's blessed us in this area. The world makes you think that you have to "get educated" on this topic otherwise you won't be successful. I'm encouraged that young couples like us could discover the gift that God created of meeting each other's needs in the bedroom without a bunch of the world's "education". It's amazing what selflessness can do for one's marriage! If we just apply that to our marriage bed it can solve a lot of problems and make things quite enjoyable.

This was a refreshing chapter to read.

Helpmeet--Ch. 15; Jen

This chapter was good and I think it's a key concept to understanding what we can "do" now that we understand how we should think. We can think well about the role we play and things like respect, obedience, and reverence but here we go into the "how" of living it out.

The word "sober" reminds me of another word in Scripture describing the elders in the church and women in another section...which is "sensible". That word seems to go hand in hand with this sober. How many insensible wives come to mind to me. So many. I know many lazy, foolish, unorganized, unplanning, apathetic women who view themselves as Godly women of God. Yikes. I've felt so convicted in the last several years (especially when my kids were babies) in this area of sober. Now I know why, GOD CALLS ME TO IT! I don't take managing my home lightly. I once had a friend say that at seminary she heard a man say that pastor's wives should all have house maids because they are just so swamped with ministry....she thought I'd agree and possibly even rally that our husbands should get us maids...but instead I busted out laughing and said something like "that's MY job and if I'm not doing it then I'm neglecting my calling as a wife and mom and I'm plain old lazy!" At no point am I to put ministry (even good things) over my family and my home. I also had a woman "confront" me upon arriving at a new church my husband was hired at, that I needed to be in a woman's Bible study and that I was basically in sin for not being in one. I explained to her that I had a 15 month old and I was pregnant with a very difficult pregnancy and was throwing up all day with very little strength and assured her that I was not able to do all the rigid homework the women's studies were requiring at the time. I barely made it to church on Sundays! She responded by saying that I could come to her Bible study and just excuse myself to go throw up in her bathroom. I then told her that when I would throw up I would also pee all over the floor. That shut her up. My point is, Bible study is a noble thing but my family still came first. I was raising and caring for a baby and also making one all at the same time and I had to embrace the limits of the season of life I was in. This didn't make me less Godly, less in the Word nor distant from God. My baby and the baby inside me, needed my body to be HOME. My home needed me to be HOME since it got the leftovers of any energy I had each day which was just enough to keep it running. My husband needed me HOME so that if I accomplished anything that day it was a meal for dinner.

I think I tend to "over plan" things in that I'm type A and the perfectionist in me makes things harder than they are. I'm always making things more complex and my struggle is learning how to simplify...so I really appreciated the tips and the thinking that Debi shared about simplifying your life in order to better serve our families. That really helped me in terms of thinking how to simplify!

Helpmeet--Ch. 14; Jen

I'm really behind on posting so I'll get a little caught up today.

I've realized, looking back over the years, that there were many years in my marriage of my self-centered lack of reverence for my husband as I study this chapter.

This quote from chapter 14 really struck me... "The very heart of reverence is extreme appreciation and profound thankfulness that this man, just as he is, has chosen to love me, just as I am." Wow. That really keeps me humble and keeps things in perspective.

I like that she also said that "men should look for a woman who is grateful for them." What good advice I can give to my son one day.

Post coming soon!!

Recommended Link; Jessica

Hello fellow help meets! Our family move to Indiana is finally upon us and I will be offline for a couple of weeks. My days have been spent packing and cleaning and I have not been reading at all. In fact, the Help Meet book has been in a box for quite some time.

Before I go, I wanted to share a recommended link for you all. It is a list titled, "12 Things You Should Not Do to Your Husband" by Camilia Brown. The excellent advice and encouragement is written in a Debi Pearl-style. Enjoy!

I hope to join you here again in the not-too-distant future,

Jessica

Comments from Jill

Jill posted this under "Comments" and most of you may have already read it, but I wanted to highlight it rather than it being tucked into the "comment" section b/c I think it's so powerful!

Jill writes:
Sorry for not posting sooner. I haven't kept up with the reading and did not have any insights to share. I sent the question on to a friend who had this to say:

As women we are called by God to be helpers to our husbands. The wife of a Command Man must to approach this calling with more caution than other women with different situations. She must understand that having a Command Man for a husband does not give him immunity from biblical exhortation, reproach and discipline. She must also understand that there are certain situations where she is expected, as are all wives, to deliver loving biblical exhortation and reproach to him. The wife of a Command Man must be fervent in prayer, gifted in gracious influence, gentle in exhortation and respectful in the reproach of her husband. She must find the most appropriate and respectful way to deliver such reproofs and exhortations to her particular husband. If a godly wife refrains from speaking the truth in love, her Christian husband will be deprived of one of God's greatest provisions for his own spiritual growth - the words of encouragement and exhortation of his own wife. Her goal must be to restore her husband to right standing with God while not undermining his headship and authority of the home.

When a Command Man takes his leadership gifts and distorts them he can become the worst sort of husband, father and man. Instead of harnessing his strengths to serve the Kingdom of God he will use his strengths to control his little "kingdom of command man" which includes his loyal subjects: wife and children. He will sin by making himself an idol. As many of us have observed, Command Man will abuse his authority in the home by behaving like a dictator. He will use verbal, emotional, and some times physical abuse to achieve his ends. He will use fear, intimidation, and manipulation to maintain control. This is not what God intended for marriage or for families to look like.

When a Christian wife quietly endures continual, long term abuse of any form at the hands of her husband in the name of biblical submission she is demonstrating an incomplete understanding of God's word, the Gospel and God's plan for the family. Please understand that I am not suggesting that her husband's sin is her fault or that she is bringing it upon herself. She must understand that for he protection, God has placed several levels of help within the Christian community. These forms of protection include Godly family members, friends, church leaders such as elders and lastly law enforcement. When any man is sinning against his wife, she must follow steps to biblical restore him, first by reproving him in private, then bring the matter before others (Matthew 18:15-17) and lastly taking him to the highest levels of governing authority if he does not repent. In The Excellent Wife, Martha Peace says, "If a husband threatens physical abuse or is sinning against his wife by verbally attacking her, she should not hesitate to involve her church's leadership to initiate the process of church discipline, or contact the governing authority (if appropriate). Letting her husband bear the consequences of his sinful behaviour at the hand of either church or governmental authorities is an act of loving obedience to God since God Himself has appointed these authorities for her protection."

A woman who is in this situation has many special and specific needs. She may not fully understand what God's word says about husbands, wives, submission and sin. It is also likely that she is filled with self-doubt and unable to see her situation clearly because years of control and manipulation have distorted her view. She may be fearful of her husband's response to any action she takes and also fearful about what the ultimate consequences of her actions will lead to. Women is these situations are especially in need of mature Godly women to come along side them. They need loving encouragement, biblical counsel, and exhortation. If willing they may need professional help from church elders and biblical counselors. Ultimately these women may also need help with finances and housing if a short or long term separation occurs.

For further reading and more in depth biblical reference I would highly recommend reading Martha Peace's book, The Excellent Wife. In section three titled A Wife's Submission she addresses submission, God's protection for wives, steps to give a biblical reproof, and many other sub-topics related to this sort of situation with excellent biblical references.
